The public can call the State Department about US citizens stuck in Haiti at 888-407-4747 from the U.S and Canada, or 202-501-4444 from outside of North America.

The troubles were sparked by a government announcement that gasoline prices would rise by 38 percent, diesel by 47 percent and kerosene by 51 percent starting this weekend.

"We urge USA citizens in Haiti who are safe to contact their loved ones directly and/or update their social media status", the embassy stated.

Volunteer groups from several US states are stranded in Haiti after violent protests over fuel prices canceled flights and made roads unsafe.

The Haitian government suspended a fuel price hike Saturday hours after demonstrators attacked a Best Western Premiere hotel in one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods of the capital.

A mission group from central Kentucky that has been working with schools and children is stranded in Haiti. The group returned to Neply but McFarlin said he thinks they won't get out until Monday at the earliest.

"If you encounter roadblocks, turn around and go to a safe area", the embassy urged.

"At this time, we have not received any reports of USA citizens injured in the incidents", the State Department said in a statement.

Chapin United Methodist Church in SC posted online Sunday that its mission team is safe but stranded. "Embassy personnel are still under a Shelter in Place order", the dispatch read.

A spokesman for US carrier American Airlines Group Inc said it had canceled three out of seven roundtrip flights scheduled to stop in Port-au-Prince on Sunday.
