May Loyalist Jeremy Hunt Named as Foreign Secretary

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said there was a "crisis in Government" after the resignation of the two Cabinet ministers.

Boris Johnson warned Monday as he quit as foreign secretary that the Brexit "dream is dying" and Britain is "headed for the status of colony" with its plan to stay close to the EU.

According to BBC political editor Laura Kuenssberg, Johnson's departure from May's cabinet has turned an "embarrassing and hard situation for the PM into potentially a full-blown crisis".

May appeared in Parliament earlier on Monday afternoon to defend her plan, minutes after Downing Street confirmed the departure of Johnson.

Jeremy Hunt arrives at the Foreign Office in London after being appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, following Boris Johnson's resignation (Simon Dawson/PA). His replacement will be announced shortly.

May reached an agreement on the Brexit deal with senior ministers during an all-day summit at Chequers on Friday.

In her reply to Mr Johnson's letter of resignation, Mrs May said she was "sorry - and a little surprised" that he had chosen to leave following their "productive discussions" at Chequers.

Writing on Twitter, he added: "Huge honour to be appointed Foreign Secretary at this critical moment in our country's history".

Johnson said that at a meeting of the cabinet to decide the plan on Friday, he had accepted that "my side of the argument were too few to prevail". He became a leading figure in the "Leave" campaign, cutting a charismatic figure as he painted a rosy picture of Britain's future outside the European Union.

Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

In her statement Prime Minister vowed to deliver "a Brexit that is in our national interest, the right Brexit deal for Britain". May replaced Davis with Dominic Raab, a strong Brexit supporter.

"In his resignation letter, Davis said the "'common rule book policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense".

Mr Davis insisted the pair had not co-ordinated their resignations.

"Somebody else can do a better job than me under those circumstances".

"I don't think it's a survival issue at all".
