"I applaud President Trump for his nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court", Ivey said in a statement. McConnell has rejected that possibility, saying the decision to not fill the vacancy under Obama was prefaced on it being a presidential election year.

Kavanaugh has taught at Harvard Law School since 2008, including courses on separation of powers and the Supreme Court.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.

Despite the rhetoric, abortion rights are unlikely to be removed.

Kennedy had voted to preserve the core principles of the high court's 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade.

Kavanaugh is a longtime fixture of the Republican legal establishment.

Kavanaugh then served as Bush's counsel in the White House before Bush nominated him for the D.C. Circuit in July 2003. He also was a key aide to Kenneth Starr during his investigation of President Bill Clinton and worked in the White House during George W. Bush's presidency.

Over the weekend, it looked like Judge Kavanaugh's star may have been fading, that perhaps he had too-close ties to the Bush family for Mr Trump's liking.

University of Minnesota Professor Timothy R. Johnson, who has published books on the Supreme Court, weighed in on the major announcement. He has written roughly 300 opinions as a judge, authored several law journal articles, regularly taught law school classes and spoken frequently in public. Weighty questions may face this court: whether a president can ignore a subpoena; whether a president can pardon himself; whether a sitting president can be indicted.

What are the implications of Kavanaugh's nomination?

McConnell, who called Kavanaugh a "superb choice", hasn't explicitly said whether his goal is to complete a confirmation before the November midterm elections.

"Tonight's announcement is only a first step", Jones posted on Twitter Monday night.

In Federalist Papers 78, Alexander Hamilton memorably described the Supreme Court as the "least risky branch".

Here's why: Kavanaugh's court rarely issues opinions on Monday.

In 2008, Kavanaugh issued a dissent in a case where the majority ordered a company to bargain with a union.

Mike Sacks, a reporter for the Fox television affiliate in NY and a self-described lapsed lawyer, was among the first to make the connection on Twitter. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. All three joined with Republicans in confirming Justice Gorsuch. Keep reading below to learn more about Trump's pick! Democrats are voicing alarm about what the new justice could mean for charged issues such as abortion rights and gay rights. If McCain were to miss the vote, only one GOP defection would be needed to block the nomination if all Democrats were opposed.

"I don't think it's going to be a game changer, but I think it's not a, 'Yeah, let's go get them, ' kind of moment for Trump". She rocketed to the top of Trump's earlier list of 25 Supreme Court candidates after her performance during her confirmation hearing last fall, when Democrats cited her deep Catholic faith as a potential problem. Kavanaugh's evolved view on the subject could have implications for President Trump. The chaos of his administration is what happens when a minority rules what should be a republic. If confirmed, the 53-year-old from Washington D.C. could serve decades on the court. He works for the Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling.

If Republicans lose the Senate, they would still have control of the chamber until January.

He will be accompanied by former Sen.

The Democratic senator is up for re-election this year in a state Trump won in 2016. The race is not expected to be competitive. Jon Kyl would guide Trump's nominee through the grueling Senate process.

And the next month is likely to witness heightened protests and campaigns to protect abortion rights.

Meanwhile, the conservative Judicial Crisis Network said it will launch a $1.4 million ad buy in four states - Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota, and West Virginia - introducing the nominee in a favorable light. But word he'd picked Gorsuch leaked out shortly before the reveal.

The group started advertising after Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement. "Judge Kavanaugh has the qualifications that make him immensely qualified to take a seat on the highest court in the land". I am one of the few conservatives who appreciate the merits of his decision in the 2012 Obamacare case, and I point out to every conservative who will listen that his record overwhelmingly consists of siding with Justices Samuel A. Alito Jr., Neil M. Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas.
