Haroon Bilour was ANP candidate for a provincial seat for the upcoming general elections to be held on July 25 general.

As an ambulance carried the body of Bilour, his 16-year-old son Danyal Bilour sat on the vehicle's roof. However, he told a private news channel that he was at home at the time of the incident.

Peshawar Police Chief Qazi Jamil confirmed Awami National Party (ANP) leader Haroon Bilour was among the persons who died in the attack. Talking to the media, the CCPO said it was a suicide attack and Haroon Bilour was the target.

Bomb disposal squad chief Shafqat Malik said eight kilos of TNT explosive was used in the blast.

The politicians facing security threats included the former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) chief ministers Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Akram Durrani and ANP's Ameer Haider Hoti.

Overall, violence in Pakistan has decreased in recent years after several military offensives against militant strongholds in the northwest.

Shortly after the blast, ANP supporters gathered outside the hospital and shouted slogans against the government for its failure to provide security to their leader.

Bashir Bilour, the father of Haroon Bilour, was also martyred in a suicide bombing targeting his rally in the fabled Qissa Khawani bazaar of Peshawar in December 2012.

Earlier it was reported that Bilour was critically injured in the incident, however, family sources later confirmed that he had succumbed to injuries while on his way to the hospital.

The death toll is feared to go up as some of those injured in the explosion are in critical condition. Emergency was declared in all the hospitals of the city.

"Political differences apart, all political parties and their candidates must be provided proper security during their election campaigns by the state", he said in a tweet.

"This shows the weakness of our security institutions and a conspiracy against transparent elections", he said in a statement.

ANP senior leader Mian Iftikhar Hussain said the attack was meant to derail democracy and delay the elections scheduled for July 25.
