Beckham urges England fans to lay-off Man City attacker Sterling

  • Kieran Trippier at World Cup in Russia

Every player deserves to be applauded.

Sterling has never been a popular figure in England, with many Liverpool fans still not over his acrimonious departure to Manchester City two seasons ago.

While Sterling has been a regular target of criticism, Kieran Trippier has been nearly universally lauded for his performances as a right wing-back. Power, positioning and precision - three traits seem to define any striker of calibre according to European sports media, but Sterling is neither of those and still offers much more than just those three traits - probably why the Englishman is often on the receiving end of relentless, jarring criticism.

The reason is his movement and speed, something which is crucial to any side's offence. Sterling's main role in the side is not to create space for himself, but to create space for the likes of Lingard, Alli and Kane.

Unlike some of England's previous opponents, Croatia won't sit deep.

Having failed to score in an England shirt for almost three years, Sterling has been strongly criticised by supporters and some pundits, with the BBC's fan-driven player-rater tool repeatedly giving him the lowest mark on the team. Beckham and Sir Geoff Hurst, though, defended Sterling's displays after the quarter-final win against Sweden.

Alternatively, he is also fast enough to retrieve a booming through ball from midfield talisman Jordan Henderson.

"We have put everything in place, we have learnt from our mistakes, which is the most important thing, and we have made things right".

The harsh criticism aimed at England playmaker Raheem Sterling is "disgusting", according to former Three Lions full-back Gary Neville.

Indeed. Croatia have players in their squad who England have to be wary of.

It is something which has been a key point of the manager's success so far and he is keen for his players to embrace the magnitude of a World Cup semi-final.

Southgate would rather be bringing on proven goalscorers such as Vardy and Rashford when England are in crisis, as opposed to bringing on Sterling who, as good as he has been, is still short of confidence in front of goal.

For all you cricket fans, Raheem Sterling is very similar to Ashley Giles in the 2005 Ashes.

"To run in-behind Granqvist all that time, he kept getting in and getting in".

England went on to win the Ashes that summer.
