Countdown withdraws frozen veggie product after Australian recall

  • Countdown has voluntarily withdrawn one if its frozen vegetable Bell Farms products after a recall in Australia

More than 200 people died in a major listeriosis outbreak in South Africa that was linked to Enterprise factories producing cold meats.

Woolies said other frozen sweetcorn or vegetable products were unaffected.

The products have been available for sale at Woolworths, ALDI and IGA, Campbells and independent grocery stores.

Listeria is a serious and sometimes fatal bacterial infection.

About 20 per cent of frozen vegetables sold in Australia are from overseas.

While cooking destroys the listeria bacteria, Woolworths's caution is unsurprising after a devastating outbreak of listeriosis in SA in 2017 claimed 191 lives.

It adds: "Instead, return the product to the store from where it was bought for a full refund". Symptoms in humans include gastroenteritis and flu-like symptoms.

He also has introduced a bill to rename the street in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington " Liu Xiaobo Plaza". The pale, bespectacled poet, who had long sported a shaved haircut, appeared gaunt and somber in most of the images.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand chief executive Peter May warned Australians to check their freezers for the possibly contaminated products.

According to the European Food Safety Authority, the outbreak has been ongoing since 2015 and has also affected Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden. "The Frozen Savoury Rice Mix product is uncooked and frozen and so requires cooking before consumption", the retailer said in a statement on Tuesday.

Those who have eaten the product and feel unwell should seek medical treatment.

Today's recall comes four months after a national listeria outbreak linked to tainted rockmelon killed an elderly Victorian person and left 15 gravely ill.

Aldi, Lidl, Iceland, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Waitrose have recalled frozen vegetable packages, including packets of sweetcorn and mixed vegetables, because they could contain listeria monocytogenes, which can cause listeriosis.

Only ALDI products with country of origin Belgium, Hungary or the United Kingdom are affected by the recall.
