A Florida student, who is also a model, says she's lucky to be alive after being bitten by a shark during a photo shoot.

But it was one spot in particular that caught her eye for a quick photoshoot, as she saw an area where nurse sharks were swimming with people jumping in with them to take pics.

Despite warnings from her boyfriend and his family, the nursing student and native of California had purposely gone into the water, which had nurse sharks - known to be harmless to humans - swimming nearby. Zarutskie said she respects all wildlife and is grateful her injuries were not worse. Zarutskie encountered multiple complications and doctors believe there may still be "pieces of the tooth" lodged in her arm. She jumped into the water on her own, without any sort of tour guide.

"He had my wrist in his mouth and I could feel his teeth sinking into my arm", Katarina told NBC News on Monday. "I was pulled underwater for a few seconds and then ripped my wrist out of the shark's mouth as fast as I could". Thinking in a much clearer fashion than I imagine I would after having been BITTEN BY A DAMN SHARK, she swam to some nearby steps, keeping her arm out of the water so as not to attract more sharks with the blood. She said she later learned that the risk of infection meant she could have lost her arm or her life.

Zarutskie did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Now, nurse sharks are largely pretty docile, but it's always worth remembering that they are still sharks. While feeding a small group, Melissa Brunning was dragged into the water by her finger before breaking free. She's been taking various antibiotics to prevent infection from bacteria, and admitted that she's anxious about how this injury will affect her modeling career.
