While the White House was successful for the most part in keeping President Donald Trump's SCOTUS pick under wraps for the past two weeks, Trump was essentially decided on his nominee after Justice Anthony Kennedy told him he would retire in a meeting, Politico reported.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.

Kavanaugh, 53, has been a judge on U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in Washington, D.C. since 2006.

White House sources and those involved with the decision-making process have cautioned that only Trump knows whom he will pick, and he will be the one to announce it tonight - in true reality show fashion.

On Monday, President Trump announced his nominee for Supreme Court Justice - Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Jones, who declined the White House's invitation Monday, took a cautious approach to the latest Supreme Court battle.

"Now, I urge the Senate to get to work and confirm our nominee".

Kennedy had voted to preserve the core principles of the high court's 1973 ruling in Roe v. Wade.

After attending both Yale University and Yale Law School, the Maryland native Kavanaugh went on to clerk for Justice Kennedy, the very man whose seat he now hopes to fill. Though Kennedy is a conservative, he was often a swing vote on big decisions, such as same-sex marriage, abortion and affirmative action.

In his remarks, Kavanaugh expressed his view of a judge's role.

The vice president also briefly discussed foreign affairs ahead of this week's key North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, where President Trump is expected to demand USA allies contribute more funding for their own national defense.

"Given the potential impact of this nomination, it is essential for the American people and the Senate to fully vet Judge Kavanaugh", American Oversight executive director Austin Evers said. He is hoping to replicate his successful announcement of Justice Neil Gorsuch past year. The three-term Republican says the Senate has gotten in the bad habit of treating people as "innocent until nominated". Like Trump's first nominee a year ago, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare.

But his supporters note his experience and a wide range of legal opinions.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer promised to opposed Judge Kavanaugh's nomination with everything he has.

Trump had been going back and forth between Kavanaugh, the favorite of White House counsel Don McGahn, and Hardiman, whom the president's sister, Maryanne Trump Barry, a former colleague of Hardiman's, has pressed him to choose.

Kethledge serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"The far right has total control of the Congress, they have total control of the administration, now they want total control of the judiciary, and I'm just not going to allow that to happen and I'm going to keep fighting against it", he said.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings past year.
