  • Starbucks Says It Will Phase Out Plastic Straws

In the US, Seattle - the hometown of Starbucks - is the only major city to have so far banned the use of plastic straws at eateries.

Starbucks, in a July 9 announcement, said it is the largest food and beverage retailer to ditch plastic straws, a move that's expected to eliminate 1 billion such units each year.

Instead of straws, Starbucks will be implementing a "strawless" lid for all iced beverages.

Some Starbucks drinks, like cold brew with cold foam, are already served in cups with strawless lids.

To replace the straws, Starbucks also debuted images of its new strawless lids, which will begin to appear in Seattle and Vancouver locations this fall, with phased rollouts within the US and Canada to follow next year. A global rollout will follow, beginning in Europe.

Starbucks said the move will affect its more than 28,000 company-operated and licensed stores worldwide.

At Happy Goat Coffee, straws are only available to those who need them, including young children and people with disabilities, Assad said. "Paper straws are becoming super trendy because they are better for the environment".

Starbucks has officially announced that by 2020 they will eliminate the global practice of using plastic straws in their outlets.

The chain has also invested in the NextGen Cup challenge, a project which aims to develop fully recyclable containers for hot beverages.

Seattle and Vancouver, BC will be the first cities to sip on their iced drinks without straws, with other locations launching the new lids through 2020.

The coffee giant will start offering straws made out of alternative materials including paper or compostable plastic at the request of the customer.

In April the United Kingdom outlined plans to eliminate plastic straws and drink stirrers, and McDonald's plans to switch out its plastic straws for paper ones at all locations in the United Kingdom and Ireland later this year.

The new lid is made from polypropylene plastic that can be widely recycled.

Small chains and retail locations are getting the ball rolling by switching from plastic straws and utensils to recyclable ones, and several local governments have passed bans on the products.

In the United Kingdom, the change aligns with the retailer's "latte levy", which charges customers five pence for disposable cups in effort to encourage them to use reusable ones instead.
