  • Turkey Sacks 18,500 Employees Including Soldiers Policemen In New Decree

TURKEY issued a decree on Sunday dismissing more than 18,000 civil servants, half of which were from the police force, ahead of this month's expected lifting of a two-year-old state of emergency imposed after an attempted coup in July 2016. Moreover, 12 non-government organization, three newspapers and one TV channel were also shut down.

Human rights groups say the purge has also targeted the government's political opponents and critics and has swept up innocent people, as well.

Turkish media dubbed the latest decree as the "last", with officials indicating the state of emergency could end as early as Monday.

Sunday's decree also reinstated 148 people previously sacked through emergency decrees.

The state of emergency has been renewed seven times and the latest is officially due to end on July 19.
