Zsa Zsa, the Minnesota canine who recently won the "World's Ugliest Dog Contest" has passed away.

U.S. news outlet Today reports the unfortunate - but loveable - pooch died overnight, New Zealand time, at her home in Minnesota with owner Megan Brainard present until the end. She had some tough competition to beat besides Scamp however; according to Fox News, she was up against a "blackhead-covered Chinese Crested-Dachshund mutt, a bulldog mix with excess wrinkly skin and a Pekingese named Wild Thang", who were all competing for the title of the World's Ugliest Dog.

The nine-year-old Zsa Zsa came from a hardscrabble background, spending five years in a puppy mill in the USA state of Missouri and being sold at auction before she attained ugliest dog immortality. When her body was returned to his owner's house on the same day, Brainard, her husband Jesse and 15-month-old daughter Mareslie held an intimate farewell ceremony for the English bulldog. "I'm in shock still", she told CNN sister network HLN.

Just over two weeks after she was crowned the World's Ugliest Dog, Zsa Zsa, an English bulldog with a penchant for pink and a perpetually lolling tongue, has died.

On Sunday, officials waited until several hours after the rescued boys had been transported to hospitals to announce their rescue. Rescue mission chief Narongsak Osottanakorn said it had resumed, with divers re-entering the cave at 11am local time (4pm NZT).

Brainard told TODAY that Zsa Zsa's passing was "devastating".

She took home first prize - a trophy, $1,500 ($AU2020) in prize winnings and the hearts of everyone.

"I picked Zsa Zsa up and took her outside and laid her down in the grass", says Brainard. "We were all saying our goodbyes".

She was known for her underbite and muscular, rounded front legs. "It was sweet. She was waving at her", Brainard shared with TODAY. "She never really showed much excitement but yes, she was definitely living it up after she won".
