The Houston Astros have optioned reliever Ken Giles to Triple-A Fresno, a night after he appeared to curse at manager A.J. Hinch when he lifted him from the game. It has been a season of woe so far for Giles, whom the Astros have entrusted the closer role. Left hander Cionel Perez has been recalled to replace him.

But when Giles came in during the ninth inning, the Astros had a 4-0 lead. He allowed five earned runs in 1⅔ innings in the World Series against the Dodgers. When asked about it after the game, Hinch said he'd have to ask Giles if it was directed at him. You can certainly understand I'll address it.

The Houston Astros won Tuesday's game against the A's in ridiculous fashion, but it wasn't all smiles for the AL West leaders. Nearly more memorable than that was Giles punching himself in the face after giving up four runs to the Yankees in the ninth inning on May 2.

Giles' troubles date back to the playoffs last season.

Giles' demotion could ultimately lead to a departure from the club if his relationship with Hinch has reached the point of no return. He's had just one save in nine appearances since June 17.
