First images emerge of boys rescued from Thailand cave

  • The Wild Boar soccer team and their coach have been trapped for ten days in a cave complex in northern Thailand

There have been calls for John Volanthen and Rick Stanton to be honoured after they were the first divers to reach the stranded group in an underground network in Chiang Rai province ahead of their successful rescue. The family members were not allowed to enter the room where they are being treated, in order to avoid infection, Dr Chaiyawej Thanapaisarn said.

"The first thing I want to do is hug him,"he said."All parents have the same feeling".

"They are the toughest blokes and kids I've ever had the privilege to meet", he said. Some are walking around, while others sit up in their beds, waving at cameras and flashing the Spider-Man hand sign from their quarantined unit at the Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital. Their discovery immediately prompted discussions on how to get them out, with initial reports suggesting that the safest way to rescue the team was to wait out the rainy season, which lasts until October, and guide them out once the flooded tunnels had dried.

Chanthawong had taken the boys about 2.5 miles into the cave after a soccer game on June 23 as part of an initiation ritual which would see them write their names on the cave walls.

"Thank you very much for taking care of our children".

Police officers took photographs of each other at the massive cave entrance, as pumps continued to suck out huge volumes of water.

"If you can imagine being physically and mentally exhausted going through a rescue and having to deal with that, when you're at your lowest ebb, you've given it all and then you find out the sad news about your father, who's your best mate - that's really, really tough", Pearce said.

"We had a little bit of hope that they might still be alive but we had to do it, we just had to move forward", Rear Adm Arpakorn Yuukongkaew said.

The last group of the 12-member football team and their young coach was brought out of the Tham Luang cave on Tuesday night. "I think there is a worldwide appeal which I think will inspire millions across the globe".

At least three of the boys in the team as well as their coach are stateless refugees and might have restricted travel rights, Reuters has reported.

The group was trapped in the cave by rising water and rescued in a dramatic operation that captivated the world.

BANGKOK/CHIANG RAI-The head of a Thai navy SEAL diving team that helped lead 12 boys and their soccer coach through a flooded cave complex to safety urged the boys on Thursday to "make the most" of their lives and be a force for good.

This story was first published on CNN.com, "Tears as Thai boys see parents for the first time since cave rescue".
