  • Focus switches from Thai rescue effort to treatment for 12 boys

The members of the "Wild Boars" team, aged between 12 and 16, were guided to safety through the twisting, submerged passages of the Tham Luang cave by a team of global expert divers flanked by Thai Navy SEALs over two days in a meticulously planned operation.

Day three of the rescue operation began at 10.08am local time today as the first eight boys - freed on Sunday and Monday - continued to recuperate at a hospital in nearby Chiang Rai.

The three Royal Thai Navy SEAL divers and medics who stayed in the cave with the boys and coach since they were located on July 2.

Dr. Jedsada Chokedamrongsook, the permanent secretary of the Thai Health Ministry, said the first group of boys taken out on Sunday were aged 14 to 16.

Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said Tuesday's rescue operation began just after 10 a.m. and involves 19 divers. Medical experts say they are in high spirits and generally healthy.

The Navy SEALs announced the successful rescue result on Tuesday, completing an astonishing against-the-odds rescue mission that has captivated the world.

Thailand's prime minister, Prayuth Chan-o-cha, said the boys were given anti-anxiety medication to help with their rescue.

The Associated Press reports that the families of the boys "were being kept at a distance because of fears of infection and the emaciated-looking boys were eating a rice-based porridge because they were still too weak to take regular food, authorities said".

Another four were rescued on Monday and the last four boys and the coach were brought out on Tuesday, prompting rounds of spontaneous applause as ambulances and helicopters passed.

Rescue mission chief Narongsak Osottanakorn said: 'We don't see the children as at fault or as heroes.

He said, "the kids are footballers so they have high immune systems".

Each of the rescued boys has been guided through the dark winding cave by two pairs of divers.

Dr Harris was supposed to be on holiday at the time of the rescue, but cancelled it to come to the aid of the Wild Boars football team. They will spend one week recovering in hospital after having been trapped inside the cave for more than two weeks.

Meanwhile, reports say the boys and the coach were sedated to stop them panicking during the risky rescue.

Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of Tesla and SpaceX, was in Thailand with engineers from his companies to offer their expertise in the rescue.
