One Facebook page advertising a London protest against Trump's first visit to Britain as president has around 60,000 people saying they will attend.

Opponents to the controversial United States leader have threatened mass protests but Mr Trump is expected to avoid areas such as central London where demonstrators are likely to gather.

Yet according to David Wemer of the Atlantic Council, a new U.S. -U.K. trade deal isn't a high priority for the Trump administration.

"This week we have an opportunity to deepen this unique trading relationship and begin discussions about how we will forge a strengthened, ambitious and future-proof trade partnership".

Later, Trump will go to Windsor Castle for tea with 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth.

The president was delayed for nearly an hour when the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels he had been attending overran because he demanded member states increase their contributions faster than originally planned.

May will seek to put the tensions behind her when she hosts Trump later Thursday for a black-tie dinner with business leaders at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of World War II prime minister Winston Churchill. May welcomed the summit and said it could help address "malign activity" by Russia which Britain blames for a nerve agent attack in March on a former Russian double agent and his daughter in southwest England in March.
