London mayor says anti-Trump protests must be peaceful

US President Donald Trump arrived Thursday in Britain, where he will find his own wall set up even as preparations for protests against his four-day visit are in full swing.

"My message to those coming to the protests in London is that this must be peaceful and good-spirited". He added: "I think that's why Brexit happened".

At a news conference, Trump said the United States could withdraw from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and go it alone, if necessary, although he said that likely won't be needed.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told reporters his country has no plans to increase defense funding. Both of those accords were the result of years of painstaking diplomacy by European leaders - and Trump unilaterally trashed them.

US President Donald Trump arrives in Britain on Thursday for talks with the leader of the United States' closest ally in Europe.

While it is not unusual for heads of state to visit Windsor Castle or meet the UK Prime Minister in her country home, it is quite unusual for an American president not to spend any time in London.

Protests are also anticipated in Britain, where the Stand Up to Trump group prepared for a "Carnival of Resistance".

There are also plans for protestors to gather close to the USA ambassador's residence in Regent's Park, where Trump and his wife, Melania, will stay overnight on Thursday.

But besides that, the U.S. president is set to avoid much of the mass protests as most of his official engagements have been planned outside London.

But trip planners may go out of their way to shield Mr. Trump from viewing another aspect of the greeting: an oversized balloon depicting the president as an angry baby in a diaper that will be flown from Parliament Square during what are expected to be massive gatherings of protesters opposed to the USA leader's presence.

"The president knows how important the special relationship is firsthand and that's why the bust of Churchill is actually in the Oval Office as we speak".

A helicopter took them from the airport to the U.S. ambassador's residence here. "If a balloon flying over London makes people laugh, I think that's absolutely worth it", she says.

Trump will spend the weekend at the former, which he described as a "magical place", before heading to Helsinki, Finland, for a much-anticipated summit on July 16 with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The British are usually polite to a fault - though they have been known to go off after a soccer match or once the pubs close.

The US Ambassador to London, Woody Johnson, insisted last week that Trump's itinerary was not intentionally designed for him to avoid encountering throngs of protesters.

10 Downing Street said she would be meeting with schoolchildren and veterans on Friday, accompanied by Philip May, U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May's husband.

Such comments are likely to be seen as unwelcome by Mrs May, who has already faced significant political criticism for hosting Mr Trump.
