Wayne Pivac will coach Wales when fellow New Zealander Warren Gatland's 12 year reign comes to an end following the 2019 Rugby World Cup, the Wales Rugby Union announced Monday.

Former Auckland coach Wayne Pivac will take over as Wales coach after the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

Pivac, who also coached Scarlets to a thumping victory over Irish powerhouses Munster to land the 2017 Celtic League title, saw off two fellow New Zealanders - two-time Super Rugby winning coach Dave Rennie, who is presently in charge of Glasgow Warriors, and Scott Robetson.

The Scarlets won the Guinness PRO12 title in 2017 and were Champions Cup semi-finalists in 2018, while all the time playing an exciting brand of rugby and many of their players impressing for Gatland's Wales side.

"I was going to look very seriously at it when the opportunity arose and for me it was a no-brainer", Pivac, 55, said at a press conference in Cardiff to unveil him as the 23rd coach of the Wales national team.

"When I first came to Wales I was totally focused on doing a role with the Scarlets, but knowing if that job went well it would lead to something else", Pivac said. So clearly for me it was a matter of how would I fit in in Wales outside of rugby.

But the death of a former Thai Navy SEAL diver who ran out of oxygen in the cave on Friday underscored the danger of the journey. Thirteen foreign divers and five members of Thailand's elite navy SEAL unit make up the main team guiding the boys to safety.

Pivac, in fact, after four years as head coach of the Scarlets, considers himself a native choice to succeed Gatland after the World Cup in Japan next year.

"I had a taste of worldwide rugby with Fiji and thoroughly enjoyed that".

"There is a lot of feedback and information that gets passed on both ways and that will continue in the next 12 months with Warren in his role and I in mine".

"There's no rush on that and we'll do what's best for the country".

"We have undertaken a hugely thorough process to make this appointment, it has been more than two years in the making and we were both impressed by Wayne throughout and by the variety of his accomplishments during a lengthy career in coaching".
