"They got rid of their coal plants, they got rid of the nuclear". The U.S.is at 3.5 percent, or $685 billion previous year.

Nato Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the main focus should be on all members reaching the current target of 2 percent of GDP.

House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is indispensable, but Trump was right to point out that Germany and other allies must keep their commitment to increase spending on defense.

Jens Stoltenberg, Nato secretary-general, pictured here among alliance leaders, struck a diplomatic note about Mr Trump's outspoken calls for other countries to live up to their goal of spending 2 per cent of their economic output on defence.

Confirming the Mr Trump's comments, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said: "President Trump wants to see our allies share more of the burden and at a very minimum meet their already stated obligations". "You tell me, is that appropriate?"

Mr Trump has repeatedly complained that the USA is left to provide the lion's share of funding for trans-Atlantic defence, as European states fail to meet Nato's target of spending 2% of GDP on the military. I am very happy that today we are united in freedom, the Federal Republic of Germany.

Credit for those added billions is being claimed fully by the USA president.

At the end of the first session of a two-day summit, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the aim first was to reach 2 percent, but moments later Trump tweeted that allies were undercutting the USA on trade and needed to immediately boost spending.

Trump has long complained that European NATO members do not pay enough for their own defence, accusing them of freeloading on America and singling out Germany for particular criticism.

What did Trump say about Germany?

"We need to look at the history of Putin, whether he's been a reliable energy supplier or whether he's used energy for geopolitical pressure, which he has", Bloomfield said.

After meeting with embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May in London and a golf weekend at a Trump-owned course in Scotland, the president travels to Helsinki for next week's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The United States spends heavily to defend Germany from Russian Federation, he said, while Germany is paying "billions and billions of dollars a year to Russian Federation".

Later Mr Trump and German chancellor Angela Merkel had a face-to-face meeting, where the row continued.

The president singled out Germany's energy deal with Russian Federation.

"We are having a great meeting, discussing military expenditure". But at the bilateral meeting he exulted: "We have a very, very good relationship with the Chancellor".

"It's certainly going to be an interesting time with NATO", Trump said Tuesday morning as he headed to Brussels.

Throughout the day, leaders were peppered with questions about Trump's behavior and whether or not they agreed with his position on Germany.
