Woman accidentally stole vehicle, kept it for two weeks

"You should never leave your key fob or keys in your vehicle - and always keep in mind to lock your auto doors before walking away from your auto".

"For the next two weeks, the woman drove around and used the black auto for her regular everyday activities", seemingly oblivious to the fact that the vehicle she was driving was not the same one that she had rented, the police said.

After renting the vehicle, MacKay said the woman drove three or four minutes to the local Walmart where she did some grocery shopping.

Cornwall police say she drove the rented black Nissan Sentra sedan to a nearby Walmart to pick up some groceries, but upon exiting the store she got into a black Infiniti QX50 luxury SUV parked nearby instead.

None of this tipped her off, until the manager drove with her over to the Walmart parking lot where the Nissan she had rented was still parked.

While they described it as a "happy ending to a complicated vehicle rental", police cast the story as a broader warning over electronic key fobs. According to police, she complained to the manager about the state of the vehicle, saying that the inside was poorly cleaned and that there was a set of golf clubs left in the auto.

Together, they returned to the Walmart she had visited shortly after making the rental.

In the video captured by Irizarry, she is heard explaining to the inebriated man that Puerto Rico is "part of the United States". Irizarry is standing in a picnic area, which she tells the officer she has a permit for to attend a birthday party.

Coincidentally, the man whose auto was stolen came into the same rental place a few days later and told the manager about how his vehicle had been stolen from the Wal Mart.

"She drove around and did her daily business in this stolen vehicle for two weeks", MacKay said.

The keys she turned in belonged to a Nissan Infiniti rather than a Sentra, leaving the manager "slightly confused", said police. When they reached the Walmart parking lot, the rental vehicle was still sitting in the same spot where it had been parked two weeks before, police noted.

MacKay said he has been an officer for 11 years and has never experienced anything like this, but is glad that it had a happy ending. For one, it was messy when she picked it up - and there was a set of golf clubs in the trunk.

Since the Infiniti owner had reported his vehicle stolen, the police were able to track him down and return the auto. She informed the manager that she wasn't entirely happy with the vehicle.

That's when the manager called the police.
