British PM May's Brexit Plan Might Not Get the Votes

Borrowing one of Mrs May's old slogans, Mr Trump told a Brussels press conference: "I would say Brexit is Brexit".

But Trump threw cold water on that prospect in his Sun interview, saying: "If they do a deal like [May's plan], we would be dealing with the European Union instead of dealing with the United Kingdom, so it will probably kill the deal".

He added: "If they do that, then their trade deal with the usa will probably not be made".

Hammered out at Theresa May's Chequers retreat, the plan has upset Tory Leavers, who fear it doesn't amount to a "hard Brexit", with David Davis and Boris Johnson quitting their ministerial posts in protest.

"I told her how to do it".

"With looser trade ties to Europe, the financial and related professional services sector will be less able to create jobs, generate tax and support growth across the wider economy", she said.

May went ahead with publishing the 98-page "white paper" despite the resignation of two pro-Brexit Cabinet ministers and a growing rebellion from within her own party. I am just saying I think he would be a great Prime Minister.

The Sun said its interview with Mr Trump was conducted in Brussels before he left for the British leg of his trip.

Mr Trump's intervention comes at the end of a tumultuous few days for Ms May.

His comments came at the end of a tumultuous few days for May, during which two senior ministers resigned in protest at her plans for trade with the European Union after Britain leaves the bloc next March.

It's a hard trick, but Theresa May has managed to produce a white paper which is too close to the European Union for Brexiteers, but not close enough for Brussels.

The Rupert Murdoch-owned tabloid published an interview with Trump as May was hosting him at a black-tie dinner at Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Britain's World War II Prime Minister Winston Churchill - the leader who coined the term "special relationship" for the trans-Atlantic bond. "No, if they do that, I would say that that would probably end a major trade relationship with the United States".

These were the most undiplomatic remarks in Trump's interview (if not, in the modern history of Anglo-American relations).

"Now, for the benefit of all our people, let us work together to build a more prosperous future". He will spend the weekend at one of his golf resorts in Scotland.

Extracts of Mr Davis's alternative White Paper, published on the ConservativeHome website, show that the former Brexit secretary was planning a "Canada plus plus plus" free trade deal based on mutual recognition of independent systems of regulation.

But it is unlikely the Trumps even saw them.

"You know, a poll just came out that I am the most popular person in the history of the Republican Party - 92 per cent. Beating Lincoln".

While Trump was critical of May, he was full of praise for Johnson, who he called "a very talented guy". He is imprisoning children and tearing them away from their families.

"I would say Brexit is Brexit", he said.

Banks and insurers in the City of London have been playing it safe by moving staff and opening hubs in the European Union to make sure they still have access irrespective of the shape of Britain's new trading relationship with the bloc post Brexit.

The biggest protests are set for Friday, when demonstrators plan to march through central London and float a huge balloon depicting Mr Trump as a baby in diapers over the Houses of Parliament.

Britain would end free movement of people from the European Union, and parliament would decide on any future immigration plans but would seek reciprocal "mobility arrangements" with the bloc.
