  • Hurricane Chris to bring heavy rain, strong winds to Newfoundland

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers).

Atlantic Ocean beachgoers should be wary of heavy surf and life-threatening rip-currents this week as Hurricane Chris swirls off the U.S. East Coast.

Chris was expected to remain well off the USA coast, the NHC said, adding on its current forecast track, the center of Chris will be near southeastern Newfoundland on Thursday night.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said that tropical storm Chris "will influence the weather but we can not tell what that influence will be at the moment because it is still developing".

The storm is moving to the northeast at 37 kilometers per hour (22 MPH).

It looks like the UK's heatwave is set to come to an end as the remnants of a powerful hurricane swirling along the United States east coast is due to hit Britain.

"All operators continue to monitor forecasted weather and sea-state conditions, and are implementing precautionary measures as required", according to a bulletin from the Canada Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board.

The BWS said Chris was “unlikely to have significant impact on the island, with moderate to strong winds and swells of up to 9ft expected as it passes”.

Radio Amateurs of Canada (RAC) has reiterated a call to Canadian radio amateurs to keep a close watch on Hurricane Chris.

Showers may linger into Thursday afternoon, with precipitation expected to decrease on Thursday night.

Rainfall and wind warnings also remained in effect, with gusts up to 110 km/h and up to 80 mm of rain possible for southeastern Newfoundland. The storm continued to spin off the Carolina coastline before becoming a hurricane July 10, when it began to track northeastward.
