  • Hurricane Chris to bring heavy rain, strong winds to Newfoundland

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 kilometers) from the center, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 kilometers).

Atlantic Ocean beachgoers should be wary of heavy surf and life-threatening rip-currents this week as Hurricane Chris swirls off the U.S. East Coast.

Chris was expected to remain well off the USA coast, the NHC said, adding on its current forecast track, the center of Chris will be near southeastern Newfoundland on Thursday night.

Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said that tropical storm Chris "will influence the weather but we can not tell what that influence will be at the moment because it is still developing".

The storm is moving to the northeast at 37 kilometers per hour (22 MPH).

It looks like the UK's heatwave is set to come to an end as the remnants of a powerful hurricane swirling along the United States east coast is due to hit Britain.
