Multivitamins do not promote cardiovascular health

  • Multivitamins do not work for helping people with their heart conditions

"It has been exceptionally hard to convince people... to acknowledge that multivitamin and mineral supplements don't prevent cardiovascular diseases", study lead author Dr. Joonseok Kim, an assistant professor of cardiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, said in a statement. He's an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's division of cardiovascular disease. The association makes no representation or guarantee as to their accuracy or reliability. "They are not meant to serve as magic bullets for the prevention of serious diseases". Some may think theyre good for heart and brain health.

They said the small number of studies that had established a link between multivitamin and mineral supplementation and a lower risk of coronary heart disease could be explained by the fact that people who take such supplements tend to have a healthier diet.

Dr. Gregg Fonarow helps direct the UCLA Preventative Cardiology Program in Los Angeles.

It's important to note that this research doesn't suggest that vitamin or mineral supplements are useless in clinical cases where a patient actively needs those supplements.

The largely unregulated supplement industry is doing a booming business, with a projected value of $278 billion by 2024, Kim's team noted.

The new findings come on the heels of prior studies which showed that supplements have few, if any, health benefits.

Trump says North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies have agreed to increase defence spending
When asked about that, Trump said he believed he could do that without Congressional approval but it was "not necessary". He also said he thought spending of 4 percent on defence - similar to the USA level - would be the right level.

In fact, both Kim and Fonarow believe supplements may actually do harm. Kim says this is due to the popular belief that multivitamin supplements may help maintain and promote health by preventing various diseases, including cardiovascular disease.

For example, he noted, 90 percent of people in the US fail to meet the Estimated Average Requirement for potassium, vitamins D and E and choline.

"Eat a healthy diet for a healthy heart and a long, healthy life", said Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., the American Heart Association's chief medical officer for prevention and chief of the Association's Centers for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

"There are also widely available and cheap once daily cardiovascular protective medications such as statins that, in eligible individuals, can safely and effectively lower risk", he said.

MVM supplements were associated with a slightly lower risk of developing coronary heart disease, but this difference was observed only in studies that did not account for fruit and vegetable intake and in studies conducted outside the U.S. The studies done in the U.S., and those that did factor in diet, found no statistically meaningful benefit from MVM supplements in preventing heart disease. There are no shortcuts when it comes to nutrition - supplements are not a replacement for healthy food.
