  • FBI agent gets applause in contentious hearing after forceful defense of agency

House Republicans insisted they had to interview FBI agent Peter Strzok to publicly air his anti-Trump texts in an attempt to discredit the Mueller investigation into Russia's attack on the 2016 presidential election.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham on Thursday criticized Republicans on the House Oversight and Government Reform and House Judiciary committees, saying she "wouldn't want to be a Republican on that committee" when Rep.

The House Judiciary and Oversight committees held a joint public hearing with Strzok on Thursday, following a separate closed-door interview with him as well as a contentious open hearing with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and FBI Director Chris Wray two weeks ago.

The hearing exposed clear partisan divides in the House judiciary and oversight committees, as Democrats accused Republicans of trying to divert attention from Trump's ties to Russian Federation through an excessive focus on Strzok. "This decision is long overdue". Strzok, a seasoned counterintelligence agent, helped lead both investigations but has since been reassigned to human resources. And the suggestion that I, in some dark chamber somewhere in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, would somehow cast aside all of these procedures, all of these safeguards and somehow be able to do this is astounding to me. Strzok defended himself as an unbiased agent in the conduct of his official duties, even if his texts - including one note in which he told Page that "we'll stop" Trump from becoming president - revealed he had a low opinion of Trump as candidate and president.

"I have a major problem. about the volume", said Walker.

"Mr. Strzok, you are under subpoena and required to answer the question", Goodlatte added.

"To my colleagues on the other side of the aisle, please replace President Trump's name with your own name in a small sample of things Mr. Strzok has said", he said.

Lawmakers in both parties have distanced themselves from Trump's attacks on Germany, Britain and other key allies. On day two he stated that the United States' commitment to the alliance remains " very strong ".

Strzok expressed little regret for the most controversial text exchange with Page.

Strzok said during the session, convened by two Republican-controlled committees: "Today's hearing is just another victory notch in Putin's belt and another milestone in our enemies' campaign to tear America apart".

"President Trump is being investigated by people who possess pathological hatred for him", Giuliani said. Both Strzok and Page were booted from Mueller's investigation past year after he discovered their texts. He also said he had never contemplated leaking damaging information he knew about the Trump campaign. "No, he's not. We'll stop it".

"Congressional subpoenas for testimony are not optional", Ryan said, promising that "we will do what we need to do to protect this branch of government". Her lawyer said Page had offered to voluntarily appear before the committees later this month but needed more clarification about what the lawmakers would be asking.

Strzok said he was directed by FBI's legal counsel not to answer questions about an ongoing investigation, but Goodlatte demanded that he answer Gowdy's question, prompting a lengthy delay before Strzok asked to speak to the FBI general counsel.

Page is expected to speak to lawmakers at a private meeting Friday. Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the oversight panel, had aides hold up posters of everyone who has pleaded guilty in the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
