A fatal Victorian listeria case has been linked to a European strain of the disease which prompted a recall of frozen vegetables across Australia.

An MPI spokeswoman said, once the vegetables were cooked, there was no risk of listeria poisoning.

The full list of foods affected by the bacteria have now been revealed, and consumers should be trying their best to avoid them.

The Woolworths product is sourced from Belgium and contains frozen sweetcorn sourced from the Greenyard Factory in Hungary.

ALDI - Only products with country of origin of Belgium, United Kingdom or Hungary.

The laws of most countries do not criminalise rebellion, with the result that there is no "dual criminality" between Spain and Germany.

Woolies said other frozen sweetcorn or vegetable products were unaffected.

Listeria may cause illness in pregnant women and their unborn babies, the elderly and people with low immune systems.

Symptoms of listeria infection can include severe cramps, stomach pain, nausea, fever and headaches.

People at risk are advised to contact their doctors immediately after possible symptoms appear.

"The products affected contain a particularly unsafe strain of Listeria and are being recalled as a precautionary measure to ensure consumers are protected, but particularly vulnerable populations", Mr May said.

Woolworths South Africa has recalled its Savory Rice Mix product after one of its suppliers was identified as the likely source of a Listeria outbreak in Europe. So far no Australian cases have been reported, but customers should still be wary.

While listeriosis can be a nasty bacteria that leads to illness, it is also a preventable evil.
