President Trump lost a bunch of followers, as did former president Barack Obama.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto are among Kenyans who have lost a sizeable chunk of social media following, in an ongoing purge by social network giant Twitter to weed out dubious accounts.

Former President Obama lost more than 2 million followers on Twitter this week as the social platform removed inactive and locked accounts from follower counts, according to a preliminary review by The Hill.

Twitter is now clamping down on problem accounts, including all locked accounts. As a result, Twitter accounts with a large number of followers lost a significant amount of users, which, based on the estimates of social media data firm Keyhole, top 100 accounts have lost about 2 percent of their followers.

"This specific update is focused on followers because it is one of the most visible features on our service and often associated with account credibility", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's legal, policy, and trust and safety lead, wrote in a blog post. He lost just 326,118 followers on Thursday, the day before most accounts saw a drop, and on Friday he regained 5,339 followers.

The two were trolled on Twitter after they lost numbers.

Twitter has been under increased public scrutiny over complaints of fake and automated Twitter profiles that are spreading fake news, spamming the micro-blogging site, abusing others or impersonating people. The company culled tens of millions of suspicious accounts on Wednesday and caused some of its highest profile users to hemorrhage followers.

In a statement, Twitter said most people will see a change of four followers or fewer and that larger follower counts will experience more significant drops.

Users with locked accounts who have not reset their passwords in more than a month are not included in monthly active user (MAU) or daily active user (DAU) counts, according to news reports. By Thursday evening, the @POTUS handle had actually gained a number of followers, even though the numbers are still continuing to fluctuate a little here and there.
