After quitting, Boris Johnson says Brexit 'dream is dying'

British Prime Minister Theresa May moved to reassert her authority on Tuesday after two top cabinet members quit and launched broadsides against her Brexit plans, winning support from many of her ministers including a leading eurosceptic.

Brexit-supporting lawmakers were angered by the proposals, saying they would keep Britain tethered to the bloc and unable to change its rules to strike new trade deals around the world.

In a statement, May's spokesman said the prime minister will fight any attempt to oust her.

As the threat of a leadership contest looms for Theresa May following the sudden resignation of Brexit Secretary David Davis, political commentators and MPs have reacted differently to the new blow to the Tory government.

Mr Kinnock said the Chequers proposal was a "step in the right direction because at least the prime minister was accepting that our future lies with Europe".

A Downing Street spokesperson said: "This afternoon, the prime minister accepted the resignation of Boris Johnson as foreign secretary".

The British government was also warned "to clarify its positions" on a fallback plan for preventing a hard border with Ireland, the so-called backstop, so the Brexit withdrawal agreement "can be finalised as quickly as possible".

"Brexit should be about opportunity and hope".

Johnson said crucial decisions on preparing for a no deal Brexit had been "postponed" - meaning Britain was headed for a "semi-Brexit".

Davis' resignation undermined May's already fragile government, which has lost several ministers in 2017 over sexual misconduct allegations and other scandals.

Theresa May faces a mortal threat to her leadership of the Conservative Party and Government today.

May said that was the "only way to avoid a hard border" between the U.K.'s Northern Ireland and European Union member Ireland.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mrs May should make way for a Labour administration if her Government can not get its act together quickly.

The 98-page document sets out a significantly "softer" version of Brexit than desired by Tory Brexiteers, prompting the resignation of Boris Johnson and David Davis from Mrs May's Cabinet earlier this week.

Mrs May told MPs that the plan agreed by the cabinet at Chequers was the basis of a "responsible and credible" offer to restart renegotiations with the EU.

He told the BBC that he thought the United Kingdom was giving away "too much, too easily" and predicted that the European Union would be demanding more concessions in talks.

May's proposals for a future European Union relationship after Britain departs from the bloc next March had taken two years of internal wrangling to agree.

"He can not compromise the workings of a shared Customs Union across the EU for everybody else", he said.

The 1922 Committee is made up of Conservative backbench MPs.

Steve Baker, a junior Brexit minister also resigned.

May said she now wanted to advance the Brexit talks, saying she had briefed European Union leaders on her plan in recent days and received a "positive reaction".
