  • Ryanair cabin crew threaten strike amid holiday season

Thousands of Ryanair's Irish passengers face delays and knock-on disruption if the airline's Dublin-based pilots go ahead with a planned 24-hour strike.

RTE is reporting that Ryanair is saying that flights between Ireland and the rest of Europe will operate as normal and that only the Ireland to the United Kingdom flights will be affected.

It said all customers on cancelled flights received text and email notification yesterday.

Ryanair say these customers will receive refunds and/or free transfers to alternative flights.

The Fórsa trade union, of which the IALPA is a branch, said it remained determined to work toward resolving the outstanding issues.

Strike action in four countries, including two of Ryanair's largest markets has been set for late July.

The International Transport Workers' Federation has been collaborating with crew unions, and last week at a summit in Dublin announced the 'Ryanair Crew Charter, ' a list of demands which was presented to Ryanair and subsequently rejected.

Compounding this action will be a 24-hour strike by Italian cabin crew on July 25 which the Financial Times reports will result in 4,800 Ryanair employees being on strike out of a total workforce of 13,000. However, Forsa had failed to respond to its requests, it said.

Ryanair said it was forced into to cancelling the flights after some the airline's Irish pilots signalled their intent to proceed with strike action on Thursday.

The industrial action that begins at 1am tomorrow will be the first by Irish-based pilots in the airline's history.

The airline has issued a statement following the strike announcement.

"No family going on a sunshine holiday is going to be impacted", he said, adding that the numbers affected represented 10pc of Irish "traffic" and 1pc across Europe.

One begged: "Where can we find exact details on the next week flight plans in and out of Ireland during the strike?"
