Trump scoffs at May's Brexit plan

  • US President Donald Trump lisens to Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May prior to a meeting at Chequers the prime minister's country residence near Ellesborough northwest of London on 13 July 2018

The UK administration, he said, has a "remarkable ability to play the ball and not the man so they will talk about the ways in which the (Brexit) deal the Prime Minister is proposing could allow for a free trade arrangement with the United States".

Turning to talk about the white paper recently unveiled by the government, Farage said Trump was "justified" in attacking Theresa May's plans for a super-soft Brexit which - by chaining Britain to the EU Single Market - "has effectively torpedoed the prospect" of a UK/U.S. trade deal.

Some Conservative lawmakers have cast May's "business-friendly" Brexit plan as a betrayal that would leave Britain too close to the European Union and warned that she might face a leadership challenge.

Trump made his first trip to the U.K.as president after a tense summit with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders in Brussels and only days after fresh ruptures in May's government over Britain's exit from the European Union.

The President said: "This incredible woman right here is doing a fantastic job, a great job".

'The people voted to break it up so I would imagine that's what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route, I don't know if that is what they voted for'.

Trump has insisted the US-UK relationship is "the highest level of special".

President Trump's complaints about "fake news" are often dishonest.

Froome was left 55 seconds behind in the overall standings with another week of nervy rolling stages before hitting the Alps. The 23-year-old Gaviria had already won Stage 1 - when he also edged Sagan - on his Tour debut for his Quick-Step team.

Despite an audio recording being released of the interview, Mr Trump claimed he "didn't criticise" the PM and said he has a "lot of respect" for her.

Trump also said that he "would have done it much differently" in reference to the Brexit plan. "I actually told Theresa May how to do it, but she didn't listen to me".

"He said you are losing your culture, and standing beside her today at Chequers he said the same thing, that he thinks immigration is damaging to the United Kingdom".

"The relationship is further back than it was a few days ago", Dr. Jacob Parakilas, deputy head of the US and Americas program at London-based think-tank Chatham House, told Xinhua in an exclusive interview on Friday.

"The reaffirmation of the British-U.S. relation we saw at the press conference will probably assuage some of the doubts we have seen about the status of the relationship", Parakilas said. And he marveled during the joint appearance at Chequers, the 16th century country residence used by British prime ministers since the 1920s.

Trump's remarks to the Sun were the most biting any USA president has ever made on a visit to Britain. But it didn't put in what I said about the Prime Minister. I get along with her very nicely.

The president reinstalled a bust of Churchill in the Oval Office shortly after his inauguration in 2017 and later that year screened the 2017 film "Darkest Hour" at the White House in a sign of his affinity for the British leader.
