Gen. Wayne Monteith, 45th Space Wing Commander, demolished the almost 200-foot-tall towers at 7 a.m. July 12 at Space Launch Complex 17, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The plot, originally designated Launch Complex 17 was built to support testing of the first operational ballistic missile of the United States "Thor".

After half a century of activity and 300 rocket launches, the two towers at LC-17 were retired today with a round of explosives.

That's why I made the decision to come here because I want to be part of that. "It's a good thing". This is the past and we are looking forward now. "Now I'm very happy to have moved to City".

However, all good things must come to an end.

The last launch from the towers came on September 10, 2011, when United Launch Alliances Delta II program sent gravity mapping probes to the moon for NASA. The Delta program itself is ending soon so it's unlikely these towers would ever see action again. Although the first launches were unsuccessful, later in this place there have been several breakthroughs in space exploration. "It gives me a great feeling to remember all of the wonderful missions that I've been able to be a part of. It's a bittersweet day as we say goodbye to these iconic towers, but their demolition paves the way for innovation as Moon Express comes to work on the same hallowed ground as the LC-17 crews".

Many gathered to watch the implosion of Launch Complex 17.
