In a freakish series of tweets on Sunday, Musk said he would produce a video proving his submarine would have been able to reach the children and in a comment directed at Unsworth, added: "Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it". Musk was responding to an interview with the diver, who said that the child-sized submarine that Musk developed to help in the rescue efforts had no chance of working.

This has, inevitably, led Musk into public arguments people who actually participated in the rescue operation - a rhetorical war that he drastically escalated yesterday, when he called one of the cave explorers a "pedo", prompting the explorer to consider a lawsuit.

In response to this, Unsworth said, "I believe he's called me a pedophile".

"It wouldn't have made the first 50 metres into the cave from the dive start point".

Musk's outburst came just a week after he said in a Bloomberg interview that he would try to be less combative on Twitter.

When asked by a reporter with Nine Network if legal action was a possibility, he stated, "Yes, yes, it's not finished". "I think people realise what sort of guy [Musk] is".

Unsworth told AFP on Monday he had not reviewed the tweets in full and had only heard about them. "I'm certain they wish he would be a more cautious tweeter".

Elon Musk brands Thai boys' rescuer Vern Unsworth a paedophile
But Musk - who publicly quit Trump's business advisory council team past year - has arguably earned the genius label. And midway through his rant, for some inexplicable reason, he accused Unsworth of sex crimes.

Vernon Unsworth, who provided expert mapping knowledge of the cave to an global team of divers, told AFP he will weigh his options when he gets back home in the United Kingdom and has a chance to examine the tweets.

Musk's "pedo" tweet attracted immediate backlash with many users calling him out for hurling serious and unfounded accusations for all of his 22 million followers to see.

Unsworth said rescue officials quickly asked Musk to leave the cave site during the rescue mission, a claim Musk also refuted, claiming that, "Thai navy seals escorted us in - total opposite of wanting us to leave". He said Musk, whom he had never met, must have a "bruised ego".

Representatives of T. Rowe Price, Fidelity Investments and Baillie Gifford - Tesla's three largest shareholders, behind Musk himself - also declined to comment.

At time of publication, Tesla traded down 3.7 percent at a rate of $307.02.

Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, offered no evidence or justification for his claim that Unsworth is a pedophile.
