  • Explosives thrown at home of SF’s Gerry Adams while Derry rioting blamed on ‘New’ IRA

Large crude devices were thrown at the West Belfast homes of Mr Adams and senior Sinn Féin party official Bobby Storey.

Mr Kelly said Mr Adams' grandchildren were in the driveway of the house minutes before the attack.

"I would appeal for calm".

The Irish nationalist party confirmed the attack on Saturday, blaming the incident on "increasingly desperate and irrelevant groups".

Mr Adams said he does not know who is responsible for the attacks, but added: "There may be a connection between what's happening in Derry. We will not allow a small minority intent on violence to drag Northern Ireland back to the past", he said.

SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MLA has branded attacks on the homes of Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey "disgraceful".

"I condemn without reservation the attack on my home and on the home of Bobby Storey", he said.

Adams said he would be willing to meet with dissident nationalists and pro-British groups involved in the clashes to try and help end the recent street violence.

"I would like them to have the guts and the gumption to sit down and tell what this is about", he said.

"I would also like those who are involved in exploiting children in Derry or those who are poisoning the atmosphere in east Belfast to do the same".

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said officers were "dealing with two incidents at two separate addresses in west Belfast".

Those sentiments were echoed in the Republic of Ireland, where Taoiseach Leo Varadkar denounced the Belfast attacks, as well as the wider violence across Northern Ireland.

Rioting began last weekend in the second city of Londonderry, fuelled by dissident Irish republicans opposed to mainstream Sinn Fein's commitment to securing a united Ireland through purely peaceful means.

Sinn Fein dismiss the dissidents as unrepresentative gangs with no political strategy that use the cloak of republicanism to engage in criminality.

Alliance Party leader Naomi Long, meanwhile, condemned a "deliberate and calculated attempt to cause fear and raise tensions within our community".
