  • Groenewegen crushes his rivals to take…

No Australian has won the Tour de France since Cadel Evans in 2011. He was satisfied with the result after what he believed to be a "boring stage" with no wind or stress.

You can vote for the stage 8's Zwift Rider of the Day below. But it was boring.

"It's a bit early to be talking about that", he said.

"I think the race, as always, will decide (leadership)", said Froome.

"I was pretty disappointing in the first few stages but now I've got the power back in my legs".

Dylan Groenewegen snatched his second win in a row on the Tour de France when he prevailed in awe-inspiring fashion in a bunch sprint at the end of the eighth stage on Saturday.

But there was drama in behind, with Richie Porte forced to abandon the race after an early fall, and four-time victor Chris Froome, Mikel Landa and Rigoberto Uran also hitting the deck.

Thomas is second overall at just 43 seconds behind race leader Greg Van Avermaet, with four-time champion Froome 49 seconds further behind.

A long TV advertising feature - even though there were three breaks before the field came together and Greg Van Avermaet took seconds at the bonus sprint.

Controversially, both Gaviria and Greipel were later disqualified.

It was the second victory in the race for Groenewegen, who also won a sprint in last year's concluding stage on the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Froome played down any talk of friction after finishing a ride on the Tour's first rest day.

"People had been saying I was not good enough to win a stage on this Tour, so I put my finger to my lips to tell them to shut up", said Groenewegen, explaining his gesture at the finish line. "With 200 meters (yards) to go I saw the gap and I was going to the finish line".

The 231-kilometer (143.5-mile) trek from Fougeres, home to the best-preserved and largest medieval fortress in Europe, concluded in Chartres, site of a vast cathedral known for its stained-glass windows.

Speaking on Eurosport, Wiggins said Team Sky will have a "real problem on their hands" if Thomas, as expected, takes the race leader's yellow jersey in Tuesday's first Alpine stage, which climbs the gravel road of the Plateau des Glières.
