Trump, Putin content with summit despite lack of concrete results

The President faced significant criticism after his summit with Putin in Helsinki, Finland, when he seemed to undermine the USA intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation had interfered in the 2016 presidential election.

To outrage in Washington, president Donald Trump has lent weight to Russian denials of meddling in U.S. elections at his inaugural summit with Vladimir Putin, where the pair championed a fresh start in relations between the world's leading nuclear powers. "We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security".

USA intelligence agencies concluded in 2016 that Russian Federation was behind an effort to tip the scale of the U.S. election against Hillary Clinton, with a state-authorised campaign of cyber attacks and fake news stories planted on social media.

Trump said Putin's denial of meddling in the election was "extremely strong and powerful". Putin "said it's not Russian Federation", declared Trump, adding: "I don't see any reason why it would be." Huh?

Mr Putin, for his part, said he and Mr Trump have maintained regular contact through phone calls and meetings at global events but "the time has come to have a thorough discussion on various worldwide problems and sensitive issues".

Earlier Monday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said that Trump's performance in Helsinki "proves that the Russians have something on the president, personally, financially, or politically".

"I don't see any reason why it would be" Russia, Trump said.

"I don't see any reason why it would be", Trump said.

Monday's meeting is being closely watched on both sides of the Atlantic, coming days after the US Justice Department indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers for their role in hacking Democratic entities during the 2016 presidential campaign.

Russia's foreign ministry tweeted in response: "We agree". And the United States political world - and even the White House's own communications team - is unsettled. Not only were Trump's comments imbecilic, he is wholly in the pocket of Putin. In fact, Trump welcomed a surprise offer by Putin to help in the investigation.

Trump told reporters he "spent a great deal of time" talking about the allegation with Putin, while Putin categorically denied any interference in the US internal affairs.

COSTER: What do you expect to be the reaction among USA allies - in public and in private?

"Yes, I wanted him to win because he spoke of normalization of Russian-US ties", Putin said.

Mr Putin described the Helsinki meeting as "candid and useful" while Mr Trump said there had been "deeply productive dialogue".

The two men held almost two hours of closed-door talks in the Finnish capital Helsinki on Monday.

Wallace said Putin was strongly against the idea of Georgia or Ukraine joining North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, explaining that Putin "went on a tear" about the alliance expanding closer to Russia's borders. The US president echoed the remarks, saying the meeting was a "really good start for everyone".

Instead, he denounced the "stupidity" of his own country's policies, especially the decision to investigate Russian interference in the 2016 election.

A Spanish police spokesperson said that Interpol had failed to delete the warrant from its database when it had expired, and that once at the police station, they had realised it was no longer valid.

The Russian president said his country has never interfered and is not going to interfere in American internal affairs.

Friday's USA indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence agents exploded with embarrassing timing for Trump as he prepared to meet Putin.

Republican Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska called it "bizarre" and "flat-out wrong" for Trump to suggest that both the USA and Russian Federation are to blame for the deteriorated state of the two countries' relationship.
