  • Adidas to use only recycled plastic by 2024

Popular sportswear brand Adidas soon completely manufacturing products from recycled plastic. This move will have an impact on their manufacturing of everything from shoes to sports bras and everything in between.

The company's head of global brands, Eric Liedtke, has told the Financial Times that by 2024, Adidas will only use recycled polyester in its shoes and clothing. But industry experts say the price difference could drop as more companies switch to recycled material. While plastic drink containers are cited as the most commonly recycled plastic product by EarthEasy, still only 25 percent of those are estimated to be recycled.

Adidas' spring and summer 2019 clothing line will contain about 41 percent recycled polyester, Culp said. The material is cheap and versatile, but governments and consumers are increasingly aware of its huge environmental costs.

Adidas made headlines in 2015 when they announced they had designed a shoe made nearly entirely from garbage.

Adidas said its goal for next year is to make 11 million pairs of recycled shoes, which is 3 percent of its annual production.

The tides are turning. The shoes are made from plastic that would otherwise wind up in the oceans. CNN notes that it's far below recycling rates for other materials. "With those kind of volumes, we can not make the transition overnight".

In an attempt to save the environment, other companies like Starbucks plans to eliminate the use of plastic straws from its stores; McDonald's scraps out plastic straws in United Kingdom and Ireland; Ikea bans single-use plastic from its stores and restaurants; and LEGO produces toy bricks from sustainable and plant-based plastic.

Global use of plastic has increased 20-fold over the past 50 years and is expected to double again in the next 20 years.
