President Trump attacked the media Sunday as the 'enemy of the people, ' but in Russian Federation, where the accusatory term had currency and dire consequences during Soviet times, Trump has finally been getting some good press.

The meeting, set to be held around midday Irish time, will be closely scrutinized by political journalists for signs of whether Mr Trump is friendlier to the President of Russian Federation than he was to the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders or to Theresa May. "I have president Putin, he just said it's not Russian Federation. We are the two great nuclear powers", he said. "I've been here not too long, but it's getting close to two years, but I think we will end up having an extraordinary relationship".

United States President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday met in Finland's capital Helsinki.

A protest sign for the summit posted on a Helsinki bus stop Monday read "Unpleasant things will happen to Journalists who ask Putin questions". "It is clear that even if he wanted that, he is unable to do it because of the well-known constraints", Putin said at his annual news conference on December 14, 2017.

Democrats had called for the summit's cancellation after new revelations surrounding the alleged election meddling. "But we look forward to a lot of good, positive things happening for Russian Federation, for the United States and for everybody concerned".

If the pair do find common ground, then the summit may take the heat out of some of the world's most unsafe conflicts, including Syria.

The meeting Monday comes just days after Special Counsel Robert Mueller indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers for allegedly interfering in the election.

Shortly ahead of the breakfast meeting, Trump had tweeted saying that his country's relationship with Russia "has never been worse", due to allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 USA elections.

Trump's United States opponents tried, in turn, to gain traction for the hashtag #BAF (Blame America First).

The Russian foreign ministry "liked" Mr Trump's comments on Twitter ahead of the summit. During the NATO Summit, he accused Germany of being held "captive to Russia" over energy. Trump told reporters during a breakfast Monday with Finland's president that he thought the summit would go "fine".

"I think this is a so-called first meeting, where the main goal apparently is to test if the dialogue runs smoothly and if a common ground can be found rather than to address some kind of concrete issues", explained Niinistö. I think that we're all to blame.

Earlier, he kicked off his meeting with Putin by listing topics they will discuss privately, but he did not mention Moscow's campaign to meddle in the 2016 US election. "I respect the leaders of those countries", he stated. "Our mutual friend president Xi".

"Europe and China, America and Russian Federation, today in Beijing and in Helsinki, are jointly responsible for improving the world order, not for destroying it", he tweeted. "I hope this message reaches Helsinki", Tusk tweeted.

Several thousand protesters gathered Sunday in Helsinki's iconic Senate Square for a protest that gathered together activists focused on issues including the environment, refugee rights, and anti-war causes. Greenpeace draped a giant banner down a church tower urging: "Warm our hearts not our planet".
