Facebook poaches chip guru from Google

  • Facebook hires a new head of chip development for its further progress

Besides Facebook, Apple, Google, Amazon, and Baidu have already embarked towards making their own hardware technologies. This month, Facebook appointed Shahriar Rabii as Silicon's head and vice president. Prior to joining this, Rabii was responsible for developing the Visual Core chip that is used in Google's Pixel smartphones.

At Facebook, Rabii will work under Andrew Bosworth, the social network's head of virtual and augmented reality, according to people with information on the situation.

Rabii was previously working as Senior Director of Engineering at Google. It's undoubtedly a bold direction for the company though it's unclear how interested Facebook is in creating custom silicon for consumer devices or if they're more focused on building for their server business as they also look to accelerate their own research efforts.

It nearly feels inevitable that once a technology company grows to a massive size, the pursuit of designing its own chips is likewise inevitable. By the end of the year, Google intends to launch pixel-oriented phones that feature advanced cameras. Apple, on the other hand, has been operating with shipments of their own custom-made processors since 2010. The company has also created chips useful for the control of Bluetooth and learning activities that are machine oriented.

The company is planning to release a range of Facebook-branded hardware devices powered by custom processors. Facebook in-house AI chip will enable the company to sync the hardware and software in line with deliverables.

As Silicon Valley's top tech companies continue to compete aggressively for talent amongst artificial intelligence experts, this marks another departure from Google. The Tech-giant has also been collaborating with AI in a bid to gain more insights on the nature of content that characterize most social media posts.
