Josh Hader responds to tweets after All-Star game

18 July, 2018, 16:39 | Author: Heidi Alvarez

While Josh Hader was pitching during the MLB All-Star Game, several tweets by the Brewers relief pitcher surfaced from 2011 and 2012.

Throughout the game, various tweets from Hader's account were unearthed that included racist, homophobic, or otherwise insensitive remarks.

Coming into the All-Star Game, Josh Hader had struck out 50.3% of the batters he'd faced this year.

Hader said he found out about the Twitter backlash when he left the game, and someone said he needed to find out what was going on. Hader owned up to them - there was no "I was hacked" excuses offered here - saying that the tweets were a sign of immaturity when he was 17 years-old. "As a child I was immature and I said some things that were inexcusable. And like I said, it doesn't reflect any of my beliefs going on now".

Hader said that his old messages do not reflect his current beliefs. I'm deeply sorry for what I've said and what has been going on.

'There's no excuse for what was said, ' said the 24-year-old Hader. "I really don't know exactly what's out there".

Hader is said to have discussed the issue with black Brewers teammate Lorenzo Cain, who was also playing for the NL All-Star team, in an attempt to explain his comments.

Hader was alerted to an online firestorm regarding the tweets when he came out of the game. Hader said he did not "vividly" remember the tweets.

Hader said he was in high school at the time and still learning who he was.

"You live and you learn", he said.

And Hader's family members in attendance took off their jerseys with "Hader" on the back during the game.

"I'm sure there were some lyrics, rap lyrics, being tweeted", Hader told reporters.

He hadn't talked to his family about it, and repeated he was "young and stupid", repeating it was seven years ago.

"We'll move on from it", Cain said. He now boasts a 1.50 earned-run average while allowing just four home runs in 48 innings pitched.

CBSSports.com notes that Major League Baseball has tried to foster a more inclusive environment in recent years, in part by suspending players for using homophobic slurs on the field, like Matt Joyce and Kevin Pillar.
