The idea is that the new levels of compression will assist and help the device built with Gorilla Glass 6 survive multiple drops.

"As consumers become more dependent on their smartphones, the opportunity for potentially damaging drops is also on the rise".

Earlier versions of Gorilla Glass have been used on all previous iPhone models since Steve Jobs chose the company to provide screen covers in 2006.

With the new Gorilla Glass 6, Corning says that they are delivering the "toughest cover glass available for consumer mobile devices", and that it is their most durable to date.

According to a recent study from Toluna, people drop their phones an average of seven times a year with more than 50 percent of those drops occurring at a height of one meter or less. With its optical clarity, touch sensitivity, scratch resistance, efficient wireless charging, and enhanced durability, Gorilla Glass 6 is poised to enable these new design trends.

Corning, the glass maker, on Wednesday unveiled its newest concoction - Gorilla Glass 6 - that should survive repeated drops from heights of 1 meter (3.28 feet). Under the same test conditions, competitive glass compositions did not survive the first drop. Corning, the company behind Gorilla Glass, often touts the strength of its glass options, and continues to do so with its latest iteration, Gorilla Glass 6. Not that there was anything with Gorilla Glass 5 that prevented any of these designs from working in the first place. While the company hasn't revealed the devices featuring the new glass panel, it has confirmed that the latest creation is now being evaluated by multiple customers - suggesting its debut sometime in the next coming months.
