Burgess said that the size and shape of the bites, and the tooth embedded in one victim's leg, indicate that the shark is either a small shark of a larger species, or a species small in size.

Soon after that attack, the boy was bitten while boogie boarding in the waters off another Fire Island beach, known as Atlantique, officials said. The girl's father, Philip Pollina, said his daughter was only 10 feet off the shore when the incident occurred. The boy was transported by police boat to a local hospital, she said.

The 12-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy were discharged after emergency medical treatment, each with a bandaged right leg.

"They confirmed that not only was it a shark bite, but they found one of the teeth still inside the boy".

Newsday reports police are investigating the incidents Wednesday off Sailors Haven and Atlantique beaches.

Separately, a 2.2 metre tiger shark was caught by a fisherman at Kismet, another beach town 3.2 km west of Islip, Mr Levine said, adding he doubted either animal involved in the attacks was that large.

Lola told a press conference: "I saw something next to me and I kind of felt pain and I saw a fin, I don't know how to describe it, and then I ran out of the water because I felt it".

Fire Island Ocean Rescue Chief Lifeguard Craig Amarando praised the boy's calmness after the incident. In that case, a girl was bitten and suffered a bite wound to her leg, WABC reported.

Fire Island beaches were closed until further notice, said national parks spokeswoman Elizabeth Rogers.

"The water is lovely, it is magnificent here. but the water can be treacherous", Carpenter said. The attacks come just days before the July 22 start of Discovery Channel's annual "Shark Week" programming marathon, now in its 30th year.
