The items, which Burberry chose to destroy rather than sell at a discount, included clothes, accessories and perfume.

British designer label Burberry, synonymous with its famous tartan print, deliberately destroyed around £28million worth of clothes and fabrics past year.

Burberry is a coveted British label, famous for their classic trench coats and use of the novacheck print. But why does it actively chose not to recycle unsold garments or privately sell surplus stock to shareholders and donate the money to good causes if it is uncomfortable with its designs being discounted or appearing in the charity market?

Burberry also admitted to the paper that its unwanted stock is burnt, but they stated that they work with special incinerators that are able to harness the energy from the process.

Retailers say the measure is needed to protect intellectual property and prevent illegal counterfeiting by ensuring the supply chain remains intact.

Over £90 million ($173.7 million) worth of Burberry products have been destroyed over the past five years, according to the Times, who noted the brand was rejecting the trend of sustainability in the industry: Burberry's waste is up 50 per cent on two years ago, and close to six times greater than the amount the exclusive brand produced in 2013.

However, it's not just the high-end brands that are guilty of this wasteful practice, past year it emerged that a power plant in Sweden was burning unwanted H&M clothes.

Fellow Make Fashion Circular signatory Nike was exposed by The New York Times a year ago for destroying stock by deliberately slashing its trainers to prevent them falling into the counterfeit market.

Burberry is just one of many luxury brands who burns products.

The company said the practice of destroying excess stock is common across the retail industry.

"Burberry has vigilant processes in place to reduce the volume of excess stock we make".

"This is a core part of our Responsibility strategy to 2022 and we have forged partnerships and committed support to innovative organizations to help reach this goal". The company also recently joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's Make Fashion Circular initiative to reduce fashion waste.

Burberry has done away with its leftovers - and people are fuming.
