  • Amazon creator Jeff Bezos has launched his New Shepherd rocket higher than previously

Assuming success Wednesday, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos appears to be getting closer to flying humans into space on New Shepard. The launch is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET, and a live webcast will be covering the entire event. The goal: to test the altitude escape motor, the motor that would engage if astronauts needed to make a fast getaway due to some unforeseen circumstances in space.

The flight will be Mission 9 for the company, and will feature a "high altitude escape motor test" which the company says will "push the rocket to its limits". Hindustan Times delivers the news across all social media platforms, on the web, and at your doorstep.

"We are excited to join the upcoming New Shepard flight".

As it continues to progress toward human flights, Blue Origin will perform another potentially unsafe uncrewed test today of its New Shepard rocket and spacecraft.

"Anything could have happened today, and this is the best possible outcome", said Ariane Cornell, Blue Origin's launch commentator. The company has not said what the price of the tickets would be.

Perched on top of the vehicle is a capsule for crew members, which the rocket carries skyward during flight.

The company's New Shepard rocket blasted off Wednesday on a test flight from West Texas. That's 74 miles or 119 kilometers.

Aside from Mannequin Skywalker, the New Shepard spacecraft carried a payload of science experiments from NASA, commercial firms, and universities, as well as cargo sent up the company's own personnel as part of the "Fly My Stuff" program - all detailed on the Blue Origin website in the Mission 9 cargo manifest.

Blue Origin continue to take 2020 for the maiden flight of the New Glenn rocket, which like its smaller sister New Shepard, will include a booster that will return for reuse. The rocket and crew capsule system is aimed at the suborbital tourism market, allowing paying customers to enjoy into a few minutes of zero-G flight prior to a parachute-assisted landing.

The previous test flight, the eighth overall, saw the capsule reach 351,000 feet - making this a record flight altitude for the spacecraft.

The New Shepard program is created to carry tourists as well as commercial payloads and scientific experiments on brief trips to suborbital space.

Blue Origin is developing a much bigger rocket, called New Glenn, as an orbital launcher.
