MA among 26 states affected by salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey

Forty people have been hospitalized with salmonella-related illnesses, but no deaths have been reported.

New York, Minnesota, Illinois and Texas have reported the highest number of cases, totaling about 38 infections.

In interviews, CDC said ill people report eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different locations.

The 37 who reported eating turkey before they began experiencing symptoms said they bought and prepared raw turkey products, including ground turkey, turkey pieces and whole turkey, according to the CDC. "Two ill people lived in a household where raw turkey pet food was fed to pets", the agency said.

Three of the patients interviewed worked at a facility that raises turkeys or lived with someone who did.

The first people fell ill nearly 8 months ago.

- The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. The same year, a Salmonella Hadar outbreak linked to turkey burgers resulted in at least 12 infections in 10 states.

The federal government doesn't classify Salmonella as an adulterant in meat, but food safety groups have called for the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) to classify certain antibiotic-resistant strains as adulterants.

Despite all this, the CDC said it was not recommending people avoid turkey products altogether and instead is advising consumers and retailers to properly cook turkey before consumption. Until the agency can identify its source, it is reminding consumers to "wash their hands thoroughly after handling any raw meat and poultry products, cook these products to the safe recommended temperature, and use a food thermometer".

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating a nationwide outbreak of Salmonella caused by raw turkey products from a variety of sources.

Thoroughly wash your hands before and after preparing food, coming into contact with animals, and after using the restroom or changing diapers.

To kill harmful germs, both raw turkey and leftovers should be heated to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. Use a separate cutting board for raw turkey and other raw meats if possible.

While eating raw turkey is obviously a bad idea, it's important to be careful when simply handling an uncooked bird.
