Transgender actress turned activist Nicole Maines (Royal Pains) is joining Supergirl as TV's first transgender superhero in season 4, producers announced during the show's San Diego Comic-Con 2018 panel Saturday. Over the course of the season, Nal will be coming into her own as a superhero.

The CW's Supergirl will be adding three new characters for this fall's fourth season: Manchester Black, Dreamer, and Colonel Haley.

Nia is described as a "soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others". It's produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. With trans folks we have a lot of people accusing us of just playing dress up for whatever reasons and that's just not true.

Starring Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen and Chyler Leigh as Alex Danver, Supergirl returns on a new night, Sunday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. What it did have was a new, space-faring, super suit.

Maines actually isn't the only new addition to Supergirl season 4.

Maines, now 21, was the pseudonymous plaintiff in Doe v. Clency, the landmark 2013 case in which the Maine Supreme Judicial Court ruled it's unlawful for schools to deny transgender students access to the restroom consistent with their gender.

Maines, who was featured in the HBO documentary "The Trans List", says she wants fans and TV viewers to take away a better understanding of the trans community with the casting. Maines's previous acting credit was on the United States of America network series Royal Pains.

Other new additions to Supergirl next season include new series regular April Parker Jones, who will play hard-line career military woman Colonel Haley, who always acts in the country's best interest even if it's not her own; and recurring guest David Ajala, who will portray man-with-a-dark-past Manchester Black. Manchester Black is a "the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the victor". He easily deflects the brutality of his mission with his charm and sense of humor.
