  • Ambiguous comments from homeland chief on election meddling

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen says she has not seen evidence that the Russians meddled in the 2016 election to help elect Trump, countering the US intelligence agencies assessment on the issue.

In January 2017, USA intelligence agencies issued a joint conclusion that Russian Federation conducted a state hacking-and-propaganda campaign aimed at influencing the 2016 presidential election in favor of Trump.

"It was important to take that stand on behalf of the intelligence community", Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado on Thursday afternoon, adding, "I believed I needed to correct the record".

In the video, as Secretary Nielsen delivers her "both sides" remarks, echoing the infamous words of President Donald Trump last August, Alexander moves his head down, nearly as if he's embarrassed or ashamed of her comments. "I think what we've seen on the foreign influence side is they were attempting to intervene and cause chaos on both sides, right, whether it was in Charlottesville where we saw them on both sides - whether it's in Syria - both sides".

"What are the ways in which we can prepare, and that's no matter who it is", she said when asked if the president's tone on the issue has made her job hard on Thursday at the Aspen Security Forum.

"I don't think there's any doubt that they did it, and I think we should be prepared given that capability and will, that they'll do it again". Pressed to explain her seemingly contradictory comments, she said, "I agree with the intel assessment, full stop". "We should be absolutely prepared to assume that they will try to interfere in all 50 states".

At first, Nielsen distinguished between efforts targeted at election infrastructure in the US and other attempts to meddle.

She left the door open on the question of whether Russian Federation favored candidate Trump.

"The overall objective is to sow discord".

The government is making efforts to reunite families that had sought to enter the United States illegally and were separated at the Mexican border as part of the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy on immigration. "Anybody that is advocating violence, we need to work to mitigate", she continued.

"Yes, I did. Yes, I did", Putin said when asked if he'd wanted Trump to win.

She said the department was working to make a court-ordered deadline to reunify children older than 5 by July 26 but it wouldn't cut corners do to it.
