  • Ryanair staff are demanding that the airline recognise unions for pilots and cabin crew and that it negotiate with a representative chosen by these unions and not the company

The cancellations amount to 12 percent of its flights.

The announcement means 24 per cent of daily flights to and from Spain, 27 per cent of flights to and from Portugal and 31 per cent of daily flights to and from Belgium will be cancelled each of the two days.

The airline said it had been contacting passengers to make alternative arrangements and has pledged to make additional customer service staff available.

The airline said that unless the strike had been called off by this evening, it would be forced to cancel 16 flights and added that affected customers would be accommodated by the airline on other flights.

Ryanair on Wednesday said it had cancelled 600 flights in Europe on July 25 and 26 due to cabin crew strikes in Spain, Portugal and Belgium.

Next week's insane summer holiday getaway disaster scenario is going to be even more miserable than usual for some, thanks to a Ryanair strike causing hundreds of flights to be cancelled across Europe.

Ryanair described the strikes as regrettable and said that the pilots involved - around 100 of 350 its pilots in Ireland - had refused to take part in a working group to resolve their complaints.

"Ryanair cabin crew enjoy great pay -- up to 40,000 euros ($47,000) p.a".

Ryanair apologized for the disruption. "But we will sit and meet with them see what issues they have and consider them".

Last December, Ryanair recognized trade unions for the first time in its 32-year history but has since then struggled to reach agreements on the terms of the recognition with some unions and has faced several threats of strike action in different European countries.
