Left-arm orthodox spinner Keshav Maharaj claimed the best test innings figures by a South African bowler since the country's readmission to worldwide cricket in the second match against Sri Lanka at Sinhalese Sports Club grounds on Saturday.

South Africa were all out for 124 by tea on day two in Colombo as the hosts' spinners claimed all 10 wickets with the tourists lasting little more than two hours as they were knocked over in 34.5 overs.

Sri Lanka surged to 151 for three in its second innings on Saturday - a 365-run overall lead - as it sought a whitewash triumph over South Africa in their two-Test series.

Maharaj's figures put him behind Hugh Tayfield's 9-113 against England in 1957 in the list of South Africa's best bowling figures in Test cricket.

Keshav Maharaj struck twice to remove Gunathilaka and Dhananjaya da Silva, for a duck, but Karunaratne progressed smoothly at the other end to reach 59 while Angelo Mathews had 12. South Africa captain Faf du Plessis top scored with 48 runs.

Dananjaya took five wickets as South Africa crumbled to 124 all out.

He's only the third South African to do so.

South Africa once again proved their weakness against off-spin that saw Perera finish with figures of 4 for 40 to go with his match bag of ten at Galle. Herath finished with 35, while Dananjaya was 43 not out.

But Sri Lanka's 338 was always going to be a challenge and Dananjaya, Herath and Dilruwan Perera then tore through the South African batting, already exposed by its defeat in the first Test in Galle.

Try as they might the South Africans could not separate the two until after the first drinks break for the day when Keshav Maharaj finally had Herath caught on the sweep shot to pick up his ninth wicket of the innings.
