  • Liverpool's Loris Karius

Liverpool travelled to Charlotte in North Carolina on Sunday as their pre-season campaign stepped up a gear in their first match of the International Champions Cup against manager Jurgen Klopp's old club Borussia Dortmund.

Seconds later Dortmund went up the other end and were awarded a penalty when Pulisic was adjudged to have brought down by James Milner.

Liverpool took the lead Virgil van Dijk in the first half but Dortmund claimed the advantage through a Christian Pulisic double.

Only four minutes had elapsed when Karius rushed out his goal to produce a poor clearance straight at Borussia Dortmund forward Maximilian Philipp.

It seems Matip is now faced with yet another injury concern, which is sure to come as a blow to Klopp as he continues to gear his Reds side up for the upcoming season.

Later, the 19-year-old followed up with a spectacular goal in the 89th minute to put Dortmund one goal ahead.

Joel Matip - 5: Got his chance to show how he fits in alongside Virgil van Dijk, but replaced after just 15 minutes with an injury problem, will keep the physios busy. Andrew Robertson's cross from a short corner was met with a towering header from Van Dijk that left Marwin Hitz in the Dortmund goal with no chance.

Half-time saw both teams make wholesale changes, with Naby Keita, Daniel Sturridge, Mario Gotze and Pulisic among the stars introduced. It was a reflection of how error-prone the German custodian is, as he then parried an effort into the path of Larsen in the dying embers, and he rounded off the evening by hoicking it into the roof of the net for a third.

James Milner took the armband for Liverpool and nearly doubled his side's lead 11 minutes after the restart when he curled an effort towards the top corner, only to see it fly narrowly over the crossbar with the goalkeeper beaten.

The Reds were again punished when Dortmund broke rapidly from a goal kick, and Marcel Schmelzer picked out Pulisic with a low cross.

For 91 minutes of the match, Loris Karius had little to do despite conceded two goals, with the first from the penalty spot and another guided through his defender's legs.

Jacob Larsen then cemented Dortmund's victory, adding a third from close range deep into stoppage time.
