Almost two dozen other tweets mainly in 2008 and 2009 were captured in screenshots before he deleted his account.

Their co-star Dave Bautista leaped to Gunn's defense on Friday after he was sacked by Walt Disney Studios. Gunn has since apologized and called the tweets "unfortunate efforts to be provocative".

Gunn joined Marvel and Disney to direct 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy, based on Nicole Perlman's script.

"The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James' Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio's values, and we have severed our business relationship with him", said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn in a statement to ET. Gunn apologized for the tweets, saying he's "regretted them for many years since - not just because they were stupid, not at all amusing, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don't reflect the person I am today or have been for some time". I'm pausing myself to take everything in before I speak out of term.

"It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger", he said.
