Seven new events will be included in the programme for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has confirmed.

The seven are freestyle skiing big air for men and women, monobob for women and four mixed team formats - a short-track relay, a ski jumping event, freestyle skiing aerials and a snowboard cross event.

The IOC had a "long discussion" about adding a women's event in Nordic combined, the only sport without a women's event in the Winter Games, IOC sports director Kit McConnell said.

A record number of women athletes are expected to participate in the Games, with the female quota being increased from 41 to 45.44 per cent.

Vice President John Coates has said 2020 Tokyo Games organizers must seek foreign expertise in sports where the country has little tradition or experience.
