Mazda Motor Corp. and Yamaha Motor Co. conducted improper fuel-efficiency and emissions tests on their vehicles, the transport ministry said Thursday.

But a growing list of improprieties has tarnished the image of the country's manufacturing industry for high-quality products and efficiency.

The three admissions came in the midst of an internal investigation ordered by the government, The Associated Press reported. According to Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Japan, Suzuki, along with Mazda and Toyota have accepted to having cheated on the emissions tests and submitted a report of samples of manufactured vehicles selected during the quality assurance process. The ministry looked at tests conducted over different periods at all three automakers.

The companies admitted incomplete emissions tests were done on some of its vehicles, but their officials certified the results as though the tests had been administered fully.

Mazda Motor Corporation's senior managing executive officer Kiyotaka Shobuda and managing executive officer Takeshi Mukai bow in apology at a news conference in Tokyo, Japan August 9, 2018.

None of the automakers found significant problems with actual emissions and fuel economy performance of the vehicles, which were destined for sale in Japan, and do not plan any recalls.

For Yamaha Motor, around 2 percent of 335 units chosen for the sampling inspection had not gone through appropriate testing since January 2016, according to the ministry.

Yamaha also confirmed it carried out inappropriate testing and apologized.

Suzuki and Yamaha shares fell 6 and 5 percent, respectively, and Mazda shares were down 1 percent, underperforming a steady benchmark Nikkei average.

Japanese automakers Suzuki Motor Corp., Mazda Motor Corp. and Yamaha Motor Co. have admitted using falsified emissions data to inspect their new vehicles after the government ordered the industry to review its procedures.

Numerous automakers, already hit by lackluster sales, have also been under pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on imported vehicles.
